Representative Work

John has amassed 48 years of high level hands-on front line experience in complex problem solving and in strategizing, negotiating, managing and effecting practical and successful business and legal solutions. His extensive experience utilizes synergies gleaned from practicing law in a variety of commercial practice areas as well as his involvement with various boards of directors and board committees. Particular areas of interest are as follows:

  • Bank financing including the negotiation and execution of loan arrangements for both lenders and borrowers concerning real estate lending transactions, loan restructuring and mortgage enforcement
  • Dispute resolution and problem solving of inter-party organizational and operational disputes including negotiation of and implementation of reorganizations
  • Commercial Arbitrations and Mediation
  • Development of commercial and residential land parcels including office buildings, major shopping centres, industrial properties, and residential developments
  • Commercial leasing for landlords and tenants concerning lease transactions involving office, industrial, retail and ground leases
  • Commercial real estate
  • Negotiation and drafting of contractual arrangements
  • Developing strategies for clients concerning the purchase or sale of a business
  • Business organization governance planning and structuring including shareholder agreements, partnership agreements, limited partnership agreements and joint venture agreements
  • Advising on most operational aspects of business enterprises, including employment matters, contract matters, real and personal property leasing matters, products and service warranty matters
  • Providing practical advice to business organizations to solve operational problems
  • Business enterprise succession planning

Profile

John brings extensive experience to Bryan & Company LLP from both his distinguished legal career as well as his community and board involvement. In addition to his busy legal practice, John finds time to be heavily involved with a host of other endeavors. John has served a Director and/or Officer of numerous private and public corporations in Canada in addition to serving on the Boards of various Alberta charities and not-for-profit organizations.

He is a former Director of Telus Corporation and Liquor Stores N.A. Ltd. and sat on and chaired high profile committees with each. As well, John is the former chair of the Enoch River Cree Casino and is also a former Chair of the Canadian Football League Board of Governors. John is a member of the Western Canada Commercial Arbitration Society and a member of the Investment Committee of the University of Alberta Board of Governors.

John has been recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada in the specialty of Real Estate Law and by Lexpert as a leading lawyer in the area of Property Development. John has also received the highest possible peer rating of AV in the Martindale-Hubbell Directory.
